The sensor has a wave guide (3) provided with a coupling area (4) that is formed as a grid coupler. A measuring-ray (12) passes a fluid crystal-phase modulator (1) and stimulates two modes (14, 15) of different polarizations e.g. transverse mode-polarizations, in the wave guide via the coupling area. A fluid crystal-phase modulator (1) is provided for controlling relative phases of the modes of different polarizations independent of each other. A reference-ray divider (24) is arranged between the fluid crystal-phase modulator and the coupling area.
