In this letter, the optimal detector of distributed multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) radar based on the Swerling-chi scattering model with 2k degrees of freedom is investigated. An optimal detector with a closed-form expression involving the confluent hypergeometric function is derived when the transmitting waveforms are orthogonal. When 2k = 2 or 2k = 4, the derived expression will be reduced to the optimal detector of the Swerling I/II model or the Swerling III/IV model, respectively. When 2k is not an integer, the approximate expression of the optimal detector is proposed. Moreover, the probability density functions of the proposed approximate expressions under both null and alternative hypotheses are derived in the form of convolutions of transcendental functions.
