The cornerstone of most retirement plans is the Social Security benefit under Title II of the Social Security Act. Social Security benefits, whether paid to the retired or disabled worker or to his dependents, are based on the earnings record of the worker, and bear a mathematical relationship to his or her earnings over many years. Generally speaking, the higher a person's earnings have been, the larger the Social Security benefit, although the actual computation of an individual benefit amount involves many factors.
