POVERTY IN AMERICA

The Center for Community Change (CCC) has released the findings from significant new research that details the way Americans think and talk about living on the economic brink. This research was conducted as part of a new initiative to dismantle the barriers that create and sustain poverty in America. Ultimately, CCC's goal is to mobilize these people to create a movement to end poverty. A major finding was that many, if not most, of the 106 million Americans living at 200% of the Federal Poverty Line simply ignore political debates about poverty because they do not self-identify with the abstract terms policy makers, thought leaders and the media apply and/or use to describe them. Because of these feelings of detachment, people living on the financial edge often do not engage in organized efforts aimed at improving their situations.
