We investigated the efficacy of combination chemotherapy with mitoxantrone and high- dose cytosine arabinoside as a salvage therapy in 40 adults with acute leukemia. From May 1987 through October 1997, 17 patients with acute myeloid leukemia and 23 patients with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, whom disease had relapsed or been refractory to previous treatment, received mitoxantrone, 5 mg/m~2/day, on days 1 to 5 and cytosine arabinoside, 2 g/m~2, every 12 hours on days 1 to 3.
