The original belt-drive CD

It was interesting to read in the January issue about the belt-drive transport used in the Burmester Reference 069 CD player/DAC. However, neither Burmester nor CEC were the first to produce a belt-driven CD player. That distinction probably belongs to Sony with its D-100 Super Discman portable player from 1987. I would think Sony employed the technique to enable a smaller motor to be used so that the machine could be made exceptionally slim. The small motor runs very fast but doesn't produce much torque so the reduction gear made possible by the belt is the ideal solution. The belt itself is fibre reinforced and also very small. It is tensioned automatically and easily lasts the life of the machine, so few owners would ever know it was there.
