Whatever shrinkage may have affected the European shows in 2012, the Rocky Mountain Audio Fest held in Denver, Colorado, in mid-October last year, seemed a throwback to the events of the mid-1990s. It was a'buzz with eager audiophiles, rich with new products and filled with seminars, software vendors and live music. Among the launches were the first-ever showing of Wilson Audio's astonishing Alexia loudspeaker, joining the range just above the Sasha, with a similar footprint and only a few inches taller - my pick of the show. The much-rumoured Audio Research REF 10, a two-chassis state-of-the-art preamp to follow the Anniversary was unveiled, as was an extended version of the classic Morch tonearm, and proof that the reappearance of Aragon/Acurus at Paris wasn't a fluke. Biggest shocker? High-end headphone amplifiers multiplying like Tribbles!
