Born in 1947, James 'Iggy' Osterberg began his musical career as a drummer, playing in a number of bands including The Prime Movers from Detroit and The Iguanas from his hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan - hence his nickname. Come 1967 he wanted something different. His idea was to form an avant-garde instrumental trio which saw him hook up with old friends Ron Asheton (guitar) and Scott Asheton (drums), later recruiting bass guitarist Dave Alexander. The group was initially named The Psychedelic Stooges.
