Warehousing The most cost-effective way to protect chemical warehouses against fire is to install an automatic fire detection system, according to a new report by WS Atkins for the UK HSE. It is easy to comprehend that the storage of large volumes of different chemicals in a warehouse raises serious safety issues, and it is therefore all the more surprising that there are few comprehensive regulations and standards that specify the fire prevention and protection measures that should be taken to minimise the safety risks. In order to provide data that will support the development of standards for compart-mentation in chemical warehouses, the UK Health & Safety Executive (HSE) commissioned consultant WS Atkins to carry out a study into the relative benefits of different compartment types, fire detection systems and fire suppression techniques. WS Atkins developed a model to assess the risks involved in chemical fires in warehouses, taking into account a variety of factors.
