The changing landscape of global public health

Over the course of the past two decades, we have witnessed an unprecedented period of growth in the field of global health. The impact of exceptionally rapid globalisation has been especially profound, transforming the field of international health that had taken shape in the mid-twentieth century into the field of global health that we encounter in the early twenty-first century. Development assistance for health has risen from US$5.6 billion in 1990 to US$21.8 billion in 2007 (Ravishankar et al. 2009).
