Real-time precise point positioning (PPP) has attracted increased attention recently due to its operational flexibility, cost-effectiveness, and more importantly, its improved accuracy. Current PPP approaches are based on the use of dual-frequency GPS receivers which however are still much expensive compared to single-frequency GPS receivers. Since the ionospheric delay is the biggest error source in point positioning and it is the reason why a dual-frequency GPS receiver must be used, this paper investigates the application of predicted ionospheric corrections generated from a newly proposed ionosphere tomographic model to support real-time precise point positioning using a single-frequency GPS receiver. The research results have indicated that the obtainable positioning accuracy is very comparable to the accuracy from the use of dual-frequency GPS data which confirms the high accuracy of the predicted ionospheric corrections and the effectiveness of the proposed positioning approach.
