IMPROVING ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT ASSESSMENT LEGISLATIVE FRAMEWORK IN GREECE: THE CHALLENGES AND OPPORTUNITIES AHEAD

The paper deals with the evolution of Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) in Greece within the last 25 years, how EIA tool has been implemented since 1986, when the first legislative framework related to EIA was enacted, and therefore, it discusses the main deficiencies and their causes. The new legislative framework, the Law 4014/2011 'Environmental Appraisal of Projects and Activities', is briefly presented, emphasizing on innovative aspects and proposals, aiming at better, faster and more effective for environmental protection procedures. Finally, the paper ventures to predict how successful the Law 4014/2011 will be in ameliorating EIA decision-making by public authorities, ensuring effective environmental protection and linking developers with locals, whose opinions are of vital importance for successful environmental management.
