Want a snapshot of private company power? The food companies on our list account for roughly 2% of the nation's GDP. The average company in this elite group rang up $8.1 billion in sales, up 6.2% from last year. Cargill leads, of course, but Scoular, an agricultural company, saw the biggest jump in rank, from 105 up to 63, with sales growth of 40%. One of the newcomers to this year's list was Del Monte Foods (No. 104), taken private in March in a private equity deal valued at $5.3 billion.
