Flimination of the reduced-price category, increased levels of reimbursement and a heightened focus on childhood obesity were key resounding themes at the American School Food Service Assn.'s Annual National Conference held last July in Reno, NV. At an ANC general session, ASF-SA's legislative counsel, Marshall Matz, urged members to launch grassroots campaigns to eliminate the reduced-price category in their districts and communities. He predicted that the process will be gradual while expansion of the "free" category will be aggressive. He also quoted a letter from Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC) expressing her support for such a measure (see From Washington, p. 20). In addition, former ASFSA pres. Gaye Lynn McDonald reiterated comments she made just days before the ANC in testimony before a Congressional subcommittee (also on p. 20). She reminded ASFSA members that the question of eliminating the reduced-price meal category will be resolved once Congress reauthorizes federal child nutrition programs that will expire at the end of this month.
