European Food Safety Authority Annual Report on Pesticide Residues

This annual report covers the year 2008. It presents the results of the monitoring carried out in the 27 EU Member nStates along with Norway and Iceland. Testing for pesticide residues is carried out under an EU coordinated nprogramme. This aims to provide statistically representative data regarding pesticide residues in food available to nEuropean consumers. The majority of the European diet comprises of 20 to 30 food products. As a result, nmonitoring residues in these commodities should allow the risk presented to consumers to be assessed. nTypically, eight to nine products are tested each year, on a rolling three-year cycle, as part of the EU coordinated nprogramme. This programme may be carried out in addition to national monitoring programmes. In 2008, the ncoordinated programme concentrated on nine food commodities - beans without pods; carrots, cucumbers; nmandarins; oranges; pears; potatoes; rice; and, spinach. The programme also covered 78 different pesticides.
