Acid-soluble collagen (ASC) was extracted from the skin of walleye pollock (Theragra chalcogramma) and partially characterized. It exhibited a maximum absorbance at 220 run, but little absorbance near to 280 nm. Amino acid composition and SDS-PAGE suggested that the collagen might be classified as type I collagen. Moreover, FTIR investigations showed the existence of helical arrangements of collagen. The denaturation temperature (T_d) and shrinkage temperature (T_s) were 24.6℃ and 47℃, respectively, both lower than those of mammalian collagens. However, T_d of walleye pollock skin collagen was higher than that of cod skin collagen reported previously. These results indicate that walleye pollock skin is a potential source of collagen and provide the theoretical basis for further research.
