Sir, In response to Dr. Christophe Wiart's comments on the possible development of serious medical conditions, such as liver cancer, breast cancer, stroke, diabetes and obesity, immunosuppression, depression, aggressivity, fatal pulmonary haemorrhages, breathing problems and seizures, due to sustained increased levels of testos-terone upon chronic consumption of Eurycoma longifolia, we were also initially concerned about whether such adverse effects would occur. Consequently, an oral daily ingestion of a standardized extract of the plant, containing the major bioactive chemical con-stituents, as an aphrodisiac and for improvement of male fertility for 48 days was studied. No significant difference in plasma testos-terone of the male rats was observed between the lower pharma-cologically active doses of 50 and 100mg/kg from that of the control animals, except at 200mg/kg (Chan, Low, The, & Das, 2009).
