Having taken off from the aircraft carrier USS Wasp on April 20, 1942, American Sgt 'Bud' Walcott force-landed his Supermarine Spitfire V BP958 in Algeria. Enrolled in die RCAF, he was serving with 603 (City of Edinburgh) Squadron of the RAF's Auxiliary Air Force and had been bound for Malta as part of Operation calendar. He'd lost consciousness during the impact and had been taken into custody by the local Gendarmes -he was in Vichy French territory.
