The SR-71 was an untouchable weapon over any hostile country, and until satellites were in place it was the USA's 'go to' reconnaissance platform. There were only certain bases the 'SR' used worldwide, which meant it depended heavily on aerial refuelling. Supporting each and every Blackbird flight were specially-modified Boeing KC-135Q Stratotankers. The main difference from the standard KC-135A was the ability to take the specialist JP-7 fuel, but rendezvous and communications equipment were also different.
