Dakota to be based at Metheringham

The Friends of Metheringham Airfield have acquired Douglas Dakota Ⅲ KG651 and will showcase the 1942-built machine at its visitor centre in Lincolnshire. The Dakota last flew as G-AMHJ in 2000 with Coventry's Air Atlantique, with whom it served as a pollution control aircraft. In 2002 it was acquired by the Assault Glider Trust at Shawbury, which returned it to its wartime appearance. It was taken on by the RAF Transport Command Memorial at North Weald in March 2014 prior to its recent move to Metheringham. As FlyPast closed for press, the aircraft was about to be transported on four low-loader trucks to its new home. Although the airfield was largely used by Bomber Command during the war, Dakotas carrying wounded soldiers often landed there after D-Day. The injured were bound for the military hospital at nearby Nocton Hall.
