EU maritime resilience - firefighting at sea

In april 2006, the UK secretary of State for Transport formally launched the UK Maritime Incident Response Group (MIRG).The MIRG was the primary outcome of a fouryear combined UK Fire Service and Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) research and development project, which focused on the role of land-based coastal Fire Service resources supporting HM Coastguard in the event of a serious fire on a vessel at sea.rnThe uniqueness of the UK project and ultimate strategy was the result of major cross-governmental co-operation and work involving a number of the principal organisations, providing the UK's civil resilience. It was stimulated by key issues such as the CFOA Firefighting at Sea Report of 1998 and the dogged determination of some coastal fire brigade officers who recognised the potential for disasters similar to that of the Scandinavian Star ferry fire, that took place near Sweden in April 1990 when 158 people perished.
