The proximity of sources of ignition and combustible materials, in the form of product, raw materials and packaging, has always made the food and drink manufacturing and processing industry prone to unwanted fires. History is littered with fires related to food and drink processing. By tradition, the Great Fire of London started in a bakery and King Alfred the Great is not only remembered for sorting out the Danes. Given this inevitable coincidence of the prime ingredients for a fire, it is not surprising that the food and drink industry still finds itself suffering from fires in modern times. Unfortunately, in the modern world, food factories are considerably larger than the local bakery and village hearth of earlier centuries and many fires in the food industry today are huge, with serious implications for a business and its customers.
