Carolina victims sue

The family of one of the nine firefighters killed in a furniture store blaze on 18 June 2007 in Charleston, South Carolina, USA (see FP&FEJ, July 2007, p.3) is suing the store's owner and other parties for alleged negligence. The family of deceased firefighter Melvin Champaign says that thick, toxic smoke from the fire, combined with locked doors in the store and its confusing layout, contributed to his death.
