For many years, fire services have promoted the use of smoke alarms, but have often struggled to create a sustained and comprehensive strategy which achieves significant and measurable results. In western Canada, however, the province of British Columbia's fire service has succeeded in doing just that. In March 2012, the Fire Chiefs'Association of British Columbia (FCABC) launched a working smoke alarm campaign in the City of Surrey that has distributed and installed more than 21,000 alarms to vulnerable households, earned the support of the provincial government and more than 24 partner agencies and stakeholders, and received more than $500,000 in cash and in-kind donations.
