摘要

Stress is a part of every organization, but it is even more evident in the fire department. As an example, research has shown that "shift work causes poor and inadequate sleeping patterns, irregular eating habits, usually inadequate diet, and strains on the personal/family life of an individual." In addition, firefighters are subjected to high levels of stress as they respond to the emergency scene, vividly portrayed during the response to the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) and the Pentagon. Stress is an outside force that occurs when our internal defense mechanisms break down and our coping methods become less effective or ineffective. Depending on the outside force experienced by the firefighter, the sensation of stress can become quite painful.
