Riding the spot market between December and February is no fun. However, with operators shunning longer-term periods and a significant build-up in prompt vessel positions, many container ship owners have no choice but to test their fate during the seasonal lull. The latest series of fixtures points to a worrying decline in period lengths in the boxship charter market, fuelled by concerns about further cargo growth and abundant supply of tonnage in the smaller and intermediate size classes.
