China goes all out for growth

Last year was a time of rapid growth in China's shiprepair industry despite difficulties caused by SARS, steel price rises, electricity supply disruptions, extreme high temperatures in southern China and, more particularly, a shortage of skilled workers. According to the statistics released by China Ship Industry Association, the number of vessels repaired and the sales revenue of the 550 repair enterprises in China last year both increased sharply. As a result, the shiprepair industry has become a major source of foreign exchange and pulled in over $1.5Bn last year, up around 20% on 2002.
