Giving first form to a major programme of double-skin, Handymax bulk carrier construction initiated with the shipbuilding industries of China and Vietnam by the Cardiff-based Graig Group, the 53, 000dwt Spar Lyra entered service at the beginning of 2005 with Norway's Spar Shipping. The capacity-optimised Spar Lyra, a veritable 'maid-of-all-work' for the deep-sea commodity trades, has brought the innovative Diamond 53 concept to reality, combining added value in design with keenly competitive ship production costs. The type is distinguished by a robust, double-hull configuration and has been shaped by thorough attention to market requirements and by a long-term view of operating needs and safety expectations.
