摘要

The European Commission is expected to tackle carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic (CMR) substances in the manufacture of toys within Europe by making provisions for these products to be used, if they are deemed to be safe, by its Scientific Committee for Health and Environmental Risks (SCHER), and if there is no alternative. A draft directive is due on 25 January (which will amend Directive 88/378/EEC on the safety of toys).rnPlanned for some years, the exercise was accelerated by the recent withdrawal of mil-rnlions of toys manufactured in China, posing serious health problems due to the presence of magnets and the high level of lead content in dyes. The European Parliament has demanded an "unconditional" ban on CMR substances, as well as on endocrine disrupters, sensitising substances and aromas.
