The phrase 'cultural China' seems at first glance to use a needless adjective to describe a self-evident truth: how could China be otherwise? The intended meaning turns out to be rather different, since it has application not only to mainland China but also to its peripheral areas such as Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, and to the various Chinese diasporas around the world, all of which culturally exhibit Chineseness in some way or another. As China opens itself up more to the rest of the world and attains a more significant presence within the world, this cultural China changes and expands in meaning and reference. The purpose of this book is to study these changes and expansions and the discourses accompanying them, albeit in relation only to mainland China and its immediate periphery.
