Over the past six years or so, debates in Western Europe about girls wearing head-scarves in the classroom, or appearing at school in porno-chic clothing, have revealed various assumptions about girls' agency and identities as well as the continued othering of Islam in the West. These were rarely, if ever, supported by reference to sociological research into contemporary girl culture. In this highly welcome study, Linda Duits helps to fill that gap. She seeks to uncover the ways in which girls of diverse ethnic backgrounds position themselves in the multicultural society of the Netherlands. Her ethnographic research follows girls during their transition from primary to secondary school, when they are around 12 years old. She is concerned particularly with how their identities develop and change during this process of transition, and how they negotiate identity performance in the spaces available to them at school.
