Cornwall is a magical, historic place- a land of saints and legendary kings. Cornwall's landscape is the result of human history as well as natural history acting on the land. The result is a landscape of contrasts; of old industry and intensive farming, expansive moors and heaths and tangled woods. Cornwall Wildlife Trust has been working to make sure the special qualities of Cornwall, particularly its rich wildlife, become part of the curriculum in local schools.rnWith just one part-time Education Officer in post Cornwall Wildlife Trust would struggle to achieve this alone, so we have been working in partnership with the 'Sense of Place' team, part of Cornwall County Council. Sense of Place aims to promote an approach to learning that is creative, fun and includes personal experiences. They also aim to enrich the educational experience by forging links across all subject areas and by using local sites, people, culture and history to enliven learning.rnCurriculum materials are devised and tested in the classroom by teachers for teachers. The materials include ideas and resources for an entire half term's worth of lessons, referred to as a 'work unit'. The work units are then published and disseminated and are taught in classrooms across Cornwall. Teachers benefit from training packages and support in delivering the work and are encouraged to work collaboratively with other schools and partner organisations, such as the Wildlife Trust. Pupils have been shown to demonstrate an increased awareness of place and identity and experience success and fun in and out of the classroom.
