Member states of the European Union and six other countries signed an international treaty on 21 November launching a £7 billion nuclear fusion energy research project. Under the agreement, Cadarache, in the southern French region of Provence, France, will be the site of a £3.5 billion fusion reactor. Officials from the 25 EU countries, the US, India, China, Japan, South Korea and Russia -representing "half the world's population" -unveiled the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (Iter) in Paris. The EU is providing half the funds for the project.
