The European Parliament's Environment Committee this week delayed until 9 October a scheduled vote on the soil proposal in a bid to find a compromise between two deeply entrenched views - for or against having a directive at all.rnGreen and Socialist MEPs generally back the directive, although some agree with Spanish draftswoman Cristina Gutierrez-Cortines that the legislation should be much lighter than proposed. However, a majority of MEPs from Ms Gutierrez-Cortines' own group, the centre right European People's Party, staunchly oppose the directive, claiming that it is unnecessary and a matter that should be left to member states.
