Suspend 10 per cent biofuels target, says EEA

The EU must suspend its target of raising the share of biofuels in transport to 10 per cent until a more comprehensive scientific study on their environmental risks is carried out, the European Environment Agency has said. The warning came as the World Bank, its report blaming biofuel production for raising feedstock prices, joined the chorus of criticism against increased biofuel production. In March 2007, EU leaders committed to raising the share of biofuels in transport from current levels of around 2 per cent to 10 per cent by 2020, following growing concerns over rising oil prices, energy security and climate change.
