MEPs vote to drop EU's 10 per cent biofuels target

The EU's controversial 10 per cent target for biofuels in transport fuel for 2020 came a step closer to being scratched this week when the European Parliament's Environment, Public Health and Food Safety Committee voted to lower it to just 4 per cent, albeit for 2015. In a 7 July meeting on the sidelines of Parliament's Strasbourg plenary session the Committee voted for a review to take place in 2015 before the EU proceeds to an 8-10 per cent target for 2020. The review would be based on impact on food security and biodiversity, commercial availability of second generation agrofuels and experiences of monitoring imported agrofuels from countries outside the EU.
