EU failing to meet environmental targets, says MEP

The EU is not meeting its environmental goals and mandatory legislation is the best way to improve the environment. That was the message of the European Parliament on 10 April, in adopting, by a large majority, a report on the midterm review of the Sixth Environmental Action Programme (6th EAP). Rapporteur Finnish Socialist Riitta Myller told the mini plenary in Brussels that research showed that "in most cases we are lacking far behind. It is clear that current environmental policies are not enough to stop the loss of biodiversity and not enough to decrease pollution or waste." She called for further action on biowaste and support for environmentally friendly forms of waste management.
