Most Disposal of U.S. Computers in 2010 Managed Domestically, Researchers Find

New research indicates 40 million used computers in the United States were recycled, reused, or sent to landfills in 2010, with most disposed of domestically. The study, Materials Flow Analysis of E-waste, was published in the October edition of the Resources, Conservation and Recycling journal and was conducted by researchers at the Rochester Institute of Technology and at the Pontificia Universidad Catlica in Peru. According to the research, 30 percent of the computers were reused, 20 percent to 47 percent were recycled, and 17 percent to 21 percent went into landfills in the United States. Between 6 percent and 29 percent of used computers were exported for end-of-life management.
