Governor Proposes Increased Spending On Environment for Fiscal Years 2014-2015

Florida Gov. Rick Scott (R) proposed $1.4 billion for environmental protection and restoration projects in his fiscal 2014-2015 budget, an increase of 8.6 percent from the current year. Everglades restoration projects and efforts to protect and restore the state's springs would see some of the increased spending. However, environmental advocates said the budget proposal only would restore significant funding cuts made in previous years. The environmental budget includes $130 million for Everglades projects, such as $40 million to accelerate completion of the C-44 Stormwater Treatment Area for Martin and St. Lucie counties as well as funding to complete the Kissimmee River restoration, which would help cleanse the water that flows into Lake Okeechobee.
