A local government is planning a federal lawsuit against a chemical manufacturer in New Jersey to require the cleanup of perfluorochemicals (PFCs) that have contaminated public drinking water wells mere, adding to growing pressure on state and federal regulators to set regulatory standards for the currently unregulated class of persistent and toxic chemicals. The Borough of Paulsboro, NJ, gave notice to Solvay Specialty Polymers USA and its affiliates Dec. 23 that it intends to file suit against the company under the citizen suit provisions of the Resource Conservation & Recovery Act (RCRA), charging that PFCs the company has released present an "imminent and substantial endangerment" to the surrounding community and must be cleaned up. The waste at issue has migrated into regional drinking water resources and river and creek sediment in Paulsboro, the RCRA notice letter says. Relevant documents are available on InsideEPA.com.
