New Jersey Plans First-ln-Nation Cleanup Criterion For Specific PFC

New Jersey regulators are developing a first-in-the-nation site remediation criterion for a perfluorochemical (PFC) known as perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA), responding to concerns expressed by a municipality in the southern part of the state that levels of the chemical in its drinking water supply are among the highest measured in the country. A spokesman for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) says the department is developing a criterion to be issued by its site remediation program for PFNA in groundwater that could help drive the level of treatment municipal water supplies in the state must meet if impacted by the chemical, and could also be used in the cleanup of groundwater at sites. The chemical is one within a currently unregulated class of persistent and toxic chemicals known as PFCs.
