ICT laboratory to help keep R&D talent in Australia

Anew model for public private partnership in research and development is on display in Melbourne after the official opening of an IBM laboratory last month, which will see some of Australia's best ICT talent employed locally. Launching the research and development lab, federal innovation minister Senator Kim Carr said the lab was a major win for ICT research and development in Australia. The federal government provided $22 million to support the lab, which will apply advanced computing to work towards better management of natural resources, diseases, and agricultural yields. The lab will employ about 150 researchers over the next five years. The Research and Development - Australia Laboratory will focus on three key areas. The first, Smarter Natural Resource Management, will explore resource discovery, production, supply chain and operations using the most advanced techniques in monitoring, analytics and automation. The second, Smarter Natural Disaster Management, aims to look at real-time event (stream) processing, weather modelling, traffic management and mobility analytics to assist in the planning and management of evacuation, communication and emergency response. In the third key area, Smarter Healthcare and Life Sciences, research will work within the current translation of life sciences research into clinical applications.
