Johnston oversees one of Australia's top tertiary engineering faculties, with a staff of 430, more than 5500 students and an annual turnover of $160 million. His global successes include two new alliances with Chinese universities Shanghai Jiao Tong and Tsinghua, his board appointment to Chiles New Engineering for 2030 by Chile's Ministry of Economy, a strategic partnership with global security company Northrup Grumman and a $62 million relationship with multinational Rio Tinto.
