Insurance: Workers' Gomp Rates Cool Off but Bigger Hikes Could be Coming

Last year's significant increase in workers' compensation insurance rates appears to be holding in 2001, according to an annual report compiled exclusively for ENR by the New York City-based insurance broker Marsh USA Inc. After several years of falling rates, the cost of workers' compensation coverage made double-digit gains in 2000. The market made a slight downward adjustment in rates during 2001, but industry observers believe that is the lull before the storm and predict that the insurance is primed to go through the roof in 2002.
