Sheet-Pile Bulkhead Design Gives Much-Needed Space To Unalaska Marine Center

Unalaska is home to the largest commercial fishing port in the nation. The local Port of Dutch Harbor includes U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) docks and the Unalaska Marine Center (UMC). The UMC received a $38-million facelift with an OPEN CELL SHEET PILE bulkhead dock designed by PND Engineers. Replacing two pile-supported structures, it aligns with both the USCG dock and other UMC dock positions and provides 710 additional ft of berth. This allows two modern container ships to dock simultaneously while supporting barge freight and bulk cargo. The sheet-pile bulkhead design added nearly 3 acres of valuable uplands for container storage and handling, as well as other critical port activities.
