MTS Uzbekistan, the country’s largest operator by market share,nannounced it is cutting the rates of its internet packages by an averagenof 12.5%. The move comes amid increasing competition innUzbekistan’s 3G and mobile broadband markets where MTS competesnagainst Unitel, backed by Russia’s VimpelCom, and Coscom,nbacked by Scandinavian operator TeliaSonera. BMI believes thatnthe move by MTS will help it attract subscribers, but we caution thatnthe data market in Uzbekistan will face diminishing returns on datanservice expansion as a result of the country’s large rural populationnand low spending power of the majority of consumers.
