Recycling Nulear Fuel Since 1966

Areva's La Hague recycling facility near Cherbourg, France, started operations in 1966 and is the largest such facility in the world. It employs more than 6,000 people and provides the first stage in the recycling of spent fuel taken from 80 to 100 nuclear reactors or about 1,700 metric tons. Protection of workers and the environment is a top priority. The environmental impact of La Hague treatment operations remains well below the natural background radiation level, and the maximum potential impact on the most highly exposed sectors of the public remains 100 times less than the natural radioactivity level.
