Professing the environmental benefits of recycling to residents is a tall order when curbside collection trucks spew putrid black smoke from noisy diesel trucks. Public perception and federal and state air quality regulations have encouraged some private and public sector recycling operators to consider cleaner, alternative fuels for their fleets. The alternative fuels of most interest to the recycling community are compressed natural gas (CNG), liquefied natural gas (LNG), ultra-low sulfur diesel (ULSD) and biodiesel.
