Lessons from the campus

Each year, when Shanghai's Jiao Tong University publishes its world ranking of universities, France responds with a mix of indignation and consternation. Indignation, because French educators complain that the system favours "Anglo-Saxon" universities and makes no allowance for France's unusual division into elite grandes ecoles and mass universities. Consternation, because not a single French university makes it into the world's top 40. Its best-placed institution-Paris Ⅵ—manages only 45th place.
