The Economic Co-operationrnFramework Agreement, orrnecfa, reached this week be-rnTaiwan and China wasrnhailed by both sides as one ofrnthe most important landmarksrnon the road to lasting peacernsince 1949. That was when thernCommunists routed the Nationalist Kuomintang, the kmt,rnleaving it with Taiwan as a last redoubt. The ecfa is indeed arnwelcome development, though it guarantees neither peacernnor China's ultimate goal, the "reunification" of Taiwan withrnthe mainland. It should be taken for what it is: a trade deal thatrnshould help Taiwan both economically and politically.
